Focus podcast: Britain's flood defences

Cornwall county council says about 230 homes and 400 businesses were damaged during intense flash floods this week. The estimated £6m cost is dwarfed by the £276m bill after the floods in Cumbria last year.

As pressure grows on the government to beef up the country's flood defences, Martin Wainwright visits Cockermouth in Cumbria, which is marking the 12-month anniversary of its devastating floods.

Shopkeepers and homeowners explain how they were dramatically affected by the floods. Martin finds out how local people got the town back on its feet, and asks what precautions have been taken for the future. Have sufficient repairs been carried out?

One in six properties in England are at risk of flooding - and cleaning up after them is an expensive operation. Malcom Tarling from the Association of British Insurers, Glyn Vaughan from the Environment Agency and Ewan Willars from the Royal Institute of British Architects give their views on what directions we need to take.
