After ten years in journalism, Chris worked in public relations roles for eight years before moving to UCLan as a senior lecturer. Chris says: "Our aim is to help students fulfill their potential in academic and practical study of PR and communication management.
"The MSc International Applied Communication programme is aimed at those who have completed an undergraduate degree in a media or humanities-related area and are keen to develop their skills further."
UCLan boasts one of the longest established centres of education in PR and communication in the country, with teaching staff who have a passion for the subject, and who strive to make classroom content topical and relevant.
"We are proud of the diverse nature of our student profile", Chris adds. "Our course attracts students from the UK and across Europe, Asia and Africa. This diverse cohort makes for stimulating discussion and reflects the global nature of modern communication.
Students who opt to study for a master's are making a significant investment in their own education and their future - they need to study hard and work at a more demanding level than they may have been used to on an undergraduate degree.
Our graduates tell us how master's study has made them more effective in critical discussion and that studying at a higher level has helped them become more strategic thinkers."
Chris continues: "UCLan supports its students in terms of gaining employability skills – everything from job shadowing, internships and short term paid placements. Our commitment to our students is lifelong - our alumni can tap into careers support long after they leave UCLan.
"Ultimately, the quality of someone's career depends on their personal drive and ability (and sometimes luck!). Graduates from this programme are working in roles for NGOs, PR agencies, marketing companies and other leading employers."
What would Chris's top tip for prospective students be? "Become immersed in the subject. Read widely, network enthusiastically, and keep a detailed record with evidence of everything you can do."
