Flytipping waste carrier caught when the rubbish he dumped contained his own receipt

This was the moment a rogue Bristol waste carrier long suspected of picking up people’s rubbish and then just dumping it somewhere else was finally caught - after one of the bags he dumped contained the receipt he’d given to his client.

Barry George charged a Bristol takeaway food business to dispose of its rubbish, and wrote out a receipt for the regular job. The receipt ended up in one of the bins that George took away and then dumped on the side of the road in Bristol.

The 43-year-old had been tracked by Bristol City Council’s Neighbourhood Enforcement Team for two years, who suspected that he would clear waste and old furniture from people’s homes for a cheap fee, and then just dump it somewhere else rather than pay the commercial rates to take it to the tip.

Bristol Waste teamed up with the council’s then-litter police Kingdom to finally get their man when they got a witness statement from someone who’d hired George, 43.

Then they found the waste he’d dumped - and went through it carefully. A Kingdom employee found receipts for a waste clearance company run by George, and the owner of a food takeaway business confirmed he’d hired George to take away his rubbish.

The police then went on the look out for George, and on June 21 stopped him, and discovered that not only did he not have a waste carrier's licence, but he had no insurance for his van either.

At Bristol Magistrates Court, George, from Bowring Close in Hartcliffe, pleaded guilty to one charge of fly tipping and was fined £480 for that, with a victim surcharge of £48, and ordered to pay £5,000 in costs.

He also pleaded guilty to running a waste clearance business without a licence, and was fined £320 for that offence. In total, George will have to pay £5,848.
