Fly-tipping on Nottingham road with Michelin star restaurant 'not a good look' for city

A rugby club on the same Nottingham street as a Michelin star restaurant say fly-tipping is becoming a serious issue for them.

Nottinghamshire Outlaws Rugby Club says people dumping waste on their ground's doorstep has been a problem since they moved in three years ago - and only got worse over lockdown.

The most recent example came on Monday, July 19 when CCTV captured a van pulling up outside the gates, before various items were dumped on the ground before the van drove away.

Andrew Shaw, 56, from Wilford, a volunteer at the club, has told Nottinghamshire Live the club wants the fly-tipping to stop.

He said: "It's just inconsiderate.

"You have Sat Bains on that road as well, which is a fantastic, Michelin star restaurant - it's not what you want nearby.

"The council do collect most of it, but after a while quite a bit gets left. Sometimes there is litter all over the place and when we have teams coming from all over the country, it's not a good look for Nottingham. It got worse with Covid and lockdown, with the tips being closed.

"We have been chasing the council to try and get signs put up. The majority of it is builders' waste.

"You'd be surprised how many people come down that road."

All instances of fly-tipping near the club gets reported to the council - Andrew has also complained about the surface of the road and the amount of potholes on Lenton Lane.

A City Council spokesperson said: “We receive complaints about fly tipping on Lenton Lane from time to time, which we investigate. The last report we received was in April which unfortunately we were unable to take further action on due to lack of evidence.

“There are pockets of different land ownership in the area, so it’s not always our responsibility to clear or investigate dumped waste. But we would always encourage anyone aware of or witnessing fly tipping to call 101 which will allow community protection officers to attend, or the police if that’s more appropriate.

“We carried out some work just last month to fix some potholes on Lenton Lane and have identified a further three which we will remedy in the next couple of weeks.”
