Flytippers dump hazardous asbestos in gardens yards from Paisley block of flats

Flytippers dumped metal sheets laced with asbestos in a garden area just yards away from a block of flats in Paisley.

Community policing officers found the asbestos while on patrol on Friday evening in the Woodside Crescent area, over the wall from the Gardens of Remembrance at nearby Woodside Cemetery.

The Paisley Daily Express reports that the corrugated asbestos roofing and guttering has been smashed up - making it dangerous as deadly fibres can be released.

Police have confirmed that Renfrewshire Council have made arrangements to have it safely removed.

Paisley Police tweeted: On Friday evening #KACPT officers were on patrol when they found Asbestos dumped in the gardens at the rear of Woodside Crescent. Renfrewshire Council have made arrangements to have it safely removed.

The use of asbestos was (fully) banned in the construction industry back in 1999, with the ban making the manufacture and supply of all asbestos products illegal in the UK.

A once highly popular building material, if you inhale asbestos fibres, they can embed themselves in your lungs and cause all sorts of problems (known as asbestos related diseases).
