Flying turtle smashes car windscreen in Florida

A woman and a turtle are reportedly recovering from a collision on the Interstate 95 in Port Orange, Florida, after the animal flew through a car windshield.

According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, the turtle collided with a 71-year-old woman who was a passenger of a car travelling on the interstate on Wednesday, after it flew though the windshield.

The woman’s daughter, and the driver, told a 911 dispatcher that a turtle was found inside the car – apparently to the surprise of both.

Another driver who pulled over to assist the mother and daughter says in the background of the 911 call: “There is a turtle in there”.

The daughter responded: “A turtle! An actual turtle?”

The woman suffered a cut of about half-an-inch on her head, and no concussion, with bleeding at the wound site, Port Orange police spokesman Officer Andre Fleming said on Wednesday.

She was transported to hospital for treatment.

The turtle was reportedly found with scratches to its shell and was released into the woodland close to the Interstate 95, in Port Orange, by firefighters.

According to the Journal, it is not the first time a turtle has flown through the windshield of a car in Florida, following a similar incident in 2016.

It is thought that the turtle was flying through the air after being hit by another car.
