Flying Scotsman Rally – Vintage metal shows its mettle

A 1907 Itala 40 storms the Duke’s Pass between Aberfoyle and Loch Katrine on the final day of the Flying Scotsman Rally.

The 112-year-old 7.0-litre sports car was the first on the road ahead of 99 vintage and veteran models that completed the tough endurance event.

Starting in the Lake District, the teams travelled over some of the most challenging roads in Scotland on the 610-mile route spread over three days, and it included several driving challenges and regularity sections.

In total, 105 cars set off at the beginning and only six retired, which is a testament to the strength of these pre-war machines.

The amazing Itala, driven by David Ayre and Iain Wilson, came home in 61st position as the cars crossed the line at the Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire on Sunday afternoon for a well-earned rest and awards dinner.
