Flying Ant Day brings swarms of ants so huge that it shows up on GMB's weather radar

Good Morning Britain's weather presenter Laura Tobin showed off an incredible 'flying ant radar', which picked up millions of the critters across southern England.

Dubbed 'Flying Ant Day', the summer brings the 'nuptial flight' of ant reproduction, which is the phase when winged ants fly from their colony to start a new one elsewhere.

This helps to prevent crossbreeding and spread their population, and Flying Ant Day is the day when the majority of these ants can be seen.

Speaking to Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway, Laura also explained how the swarms were so huge that they were picked up on a weather radar.

She said: "People may have seen lots of flying ants.

What is flying ant day?

"I've actually got a radar to show the flying ants. It looks like rain on the radar, but millions of flying ants are picked up by the radar."

She added: "So a radar works by a signal going out, hitting and rain drop and then coming back to tell you it's raining.

"So the signal went out, hit all of the flying ants and came back."
