Flyers rally but fall in overtime in to Coyotes

GLENDALE, Ariz. _ One night after they started their season with an impressive victory, the Flyers took a step backward Saturday night.

Defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored with 1 minute, 48 seconds left in overtime to lift Arizona to a 4-3 win at the Gila River Arena.

The Flyers had dominated the overtime, and Mike Smith made a sprawling save on Matt Read's point-blank chance with 3:05 to go.

It was the first game of the season for speedy and youthful Arizona, while the Flyers were coming off a 4-2 opening-night win in Los Angeles on Friday.

Read took a long pass from Travis Konecny, maneuvered past rookie defenseman Jakob Chychrun (son of former Flyer Jeff), and made a pretty forehand-backhand move to slip the puck past Smith, tying the game at 3-3 with 15:24 to play in the third period.

The Flyers, who were trying to start a season 2-0 for the first time since 2011-12, had gotten within 3-2 as Claude Giroux weaved around a couple of defenders to get off a shot, and Wayne Simmonds banged in the rebound with 13:44 left in the second period.

With about 3{ minutes to go in the second, Konency, who had a pair of assists in his NHL debut Friday, came close to tying the score with what would have been his first goal. Konecny made a slick move to get free from a defender, then fired a tracer from the high slot that Smith gloved.

Arizona, benefiting from two reviewed goal decisions and sloppy play by the Flyers, built a 2-1 first-period lead.

After the Flyers' third penalty in the first 8:45 _ two for too many men on the ice _ Shane Doan scored on a power-play rebound to put the Coyotes ahead, 1-0. Goalie Steve Mason was knocked down by rookie Christian Dvorak as Doan scored, and Flyers coach Dave Hakstol challenged the play, claiming goalie interference.

But the goal stood on the review, and it appeared defenseman Ivan Provorov got a piece of Dvorak and nudged him into Mason.

About four minutes later, Michael Raffl redirected Nick Schultz's shot past Smith, knotting the score at 1-1 with 7:29 left in the first.

"The puck found its way up top and I was just trying to crash the net and ended up tipping the puck," Raffl said.

Just 1:29 after Raffl's goal, former Coyote Boyd Gordon appeared to have his second goal in two games, which would have matched his total in the 2015-16 season. From behind the goal line, Gordon's shot deflected off Smith and past the goalie. The Flyers celebrated. Briefly.

It was ruled no goal on the ice, and the replay was inconclusive, so it stayed 1-1 as another review went Arizona's way.

The fact that the puck blended in with Smith's black pads made it difficult to see if it was entirely over the goal line.

With 5:43 left in the first period, Mason couldn't control a puck off the end boards and Martin Hanzal scored from out front to put Arizona ahead, 2-1.

Arizona, which had three rookies making their NHL debuts, took a 3-1 lead 17 seconds into the second period as Brad Richardson scored on a shorthanded breakaway after Shayne Gostisbehere's turnover.

The Flyers were 0 for 4 on the power play and are 0 for 6 in the first two games.

Saturday marked the second straight night the Flyers allowed the game's first eight shots before steadying themselves. They will try to get off to a better start Tuesday in Chicago before playing their home opener Thursday against Anaheim.
