Flybe makes comeback with UK flights two years after it collapsed

Collapsed airline Flybe has officially made a comeback today, relaunching as Flybe Ltd with bases in Birmingham and Belfast City.

The airline was pushed into administration in March 2020 as Covid wreaked havoc on parts of the travel market, but was saved last year when its business and assets were bought by Thyme Opco, and it was established as Flybe Ltd.

Today, the airline has relaunched and bookings have opened on a series of both domestic and international routes, with the first flights due to take off from April 13.

The airline is looking to launch a total of 23 routes, which will mean up to 530 flights per week. They will be operated on the company's Dash 8-400 planes.

This will include UK routes to the likes of Leeds, London Heathrow, Manchester, East Midlands, Edinburgh and Glasgow, as well as some international routes to Amsterdam in the Netherlands and Avignon Provence in France.

The company has also said it will be sharing more details of other routes in the coming months.

Fares start from £29.99 each way, and can already be booked on Flybe.com. To celebrate its launch day, the airline is also currently offering an extra £10 off any bookings made today (March 22).

The airline's CEO, Dave Pflieger, said in a statement: "We are delighted to now be out for sale and starting service next month. We think our new flights will benefit everyone who wants low fares and more flights to go on holiday and visit loved ones. Our new network will also ensure better regional connectivity inside the UK and between various UK and EU regions."

The airline's headquarters will be based in Birmingham, but earlier this month the company also revealed it would be opening a second main base at Belfast City Airport, with "plans to rapidly grow, create more jobs, and add more flights as the summer progresses".

According to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium, in 2019 Flybe was the largest airline for UK domestic flights, with its busiest airports including Manchester, Birmingham, Belfast City and Southampton respectively.

At its peak, the airline operated flights to approximately 70 airports in 13 countries.
