Flybe flight forced to return to Manchester after crack develops in windscreen

A flight with 73 passengers on board was forced to return back to Manchester Airport after a crack developed in the plane's windscreen.

The captain declared an emergency over Shrewsbury after take-off, according to reports.

The turboprop-powered Flybe flight - BE374 - left Manchester Airport bound for Exeter at around 12.41pm.

The airline confirmed the plane landed safely and was met on the Manchester runway by emergency services as a precaution in line with proceedure.

In a statement, Flybe apologised to all passengers.

A spokesman said available plans were being assessed to complete the flight to Exeter.

The airline said: "Flybe can confirm that the aircraft operating the above flight landed safely at Manchester Airport without incident having returned from airborne following a crack appearing in one of the single layers of its multi-layered windscreen.

"The captain took the necessary action and, as a usual precautionary measure, the airport put its emergency vehicles on standby.

"All 73 passengers disembarked as normal once the aircraft arrived on stand. Flybe is currently assessing the plans available so they can complete their travel to Exeter.

"The safety of its passengers and crew is the airline’s number one priority and Flybe apologises for the inconvenience experienced."
