Flights from Edinburgh: Passengers left stranded after Flybe collapse with 'no sign' of staff or planes

Regional UK airline Flybe has collapsed leaving passengers stranded in airports across the country, including Edinburgh Airport.

The airline went into administration in the early hours of this morning (5 March) and said "additional pressure" caused by the coronavirus outbreak was partly to blame.

Over 2,000 jobs are now at risk and Flybe has advised passengers not to travel to the airport unless they had arranged an alternative flight.

In a statement Edinburgh Airport said: "We regret to inform passengers that Flybe has entered administration. All flights are cancelled. Please do not come to the airport as your Flybe flight will not be operating."

The struggling airline reportedly grounded multiple flights on Wednesday night, while Flybe aircraft at airports, including at Edinburgh Airport, were not being refuelled and engineers were being laid off.

Glasgow Live reported Flybe planes were seized at Glasgow Airport in the hours before the struggling airline went into administration, with two aircrafts said to be impounded.

One passenger who on a flight destined for Edinburgh said the flight turned back and landed in Manchester, Calvin McFarlane added he was "still on a coach trying to get home".

Another stranded passenger said: "Popped up to sunny Edinburgh this afternoon by @Flybe for my son's parent's evening.

"Now at Edinburgh airport waiting to go home but no sign of staff or planes!! Hugely annoying and inconvenient but sadly lots of people have lost jobs and families their income - very sad if true."

Meanwhile, other passengers shared their concerns for staff. One man wrote on Twitter: "I should be flying to Edinburgh for Scotland v France in Six Nations.

"I can’t go now due to Flybe collapse. However, my own disappointment is nothing compared to the many people losing their jobs today. I hope they can all find work."

"Stuck in Edinburgh. Meant to be on Flybe back to Birmingham today.

"Worse places in the world to be stranded and this is a minor inconvenience for me in the grand scheme of things. Feel so sorry for the great Flybe staff", said one.
