Fly-tipping and animal snaring two major problems in Wishaw woodland

Fly-tipping and animal snaring are two major problems affecting woodlands around Wishaw.

In previous months, members of Coltness Community Council have been attempting to clear up a number of areas and free them from the scourge of fly-tipping.

However, despite the best efforts of the group and a small army of volunteers, the area has once again been hit with all sorts of rubbish being dumped.

Graham Butt is a member of the community council and also runs the Campfire History project.

He said: “It’s just been horrendous to see the level of waste that is being dumped.

“When I was out walking I discovered a full shed and what appeared to be a garage just left in the woods.

“Most of it has been dumped where we have cleared up so it’s very disheartening.

“Recycling centres are now open but they are only taking household waste so I can see this problem continuing.”

Members of the group have also encountered several snares which have been set up to capture animals who call the woodlands home.

Many have been taken away with the police and the Scottish SPCA also being contacted.

Community council chairman John Carr said: “There has been reports of a number of snares being used and thankfully the police now know about it.

“We want to make the woodlands the best it can be but this type of thing doesn’t help us.”

Graham Butt added: “We have seen around 15 or 16 snares in total.

“They were set around a number of badger setts although I think they may have been looking to snare some rabbits too.

“We had taken a number of them down and then they re-appeared.

“Thankfully we put a number of posts on social media and they haven’t reappeared.”
