Not acceptable.
That was the verdict of volunteers saddened by the state of a Kilwinning beauty spot where junk including old bathroom fittings had been dumped.
Volunteers led by the Scottish Wildlife Trust and NAC Street Scene staff took part in a litter-pick which was organised for Bannoch Road as part of Promoting Kilwinning’s spring clean-up campaign.
But the band of volunteers were shocked to find the wooded area strewn with children’s toys, the old bathroom suite, a filthy mattress and a plastic paddling pool.
Harry Richards, community engagement officer for the Scottish Wildlife Trust, Ayrshire branch, said: “The Scottish Wildlife Trust in partnership with Promoting Kilwinning tackled a local country lane adjacent to their Corsehillmuir Wood Wildlife Reserve in Kilwinning.
“This rural country lane has become a hot-spot for fly tipping over the past few years.”
Harry said that the littering and fly tipping problem can cause problems for wildlife and is an unsightly blot on the landscape.
He explained: “Whilst it’s frustrating that certain members of the community persist in throwing their litter and junk away, it’s also heartening that plenty of the local community feel so strongly that they attend organised litter-picks like this one.
“There are plenty of opportunities locally to get involved and seeing new faces is always a thrill. At the end of a litter pick we always feel a real sense of achievement.
“Hopefully the fly tippers and litter bugs will get the message that it is not acceptable to casually discard their junk in the countryside.”
