Fly tipper left with £1k bill after refusing to pay £80 fine

A fly tipper has been left with bill of more than £1,000 after refusing to pay an £80 fixed penalty notice.

Krisztian Horvath, 33, left a sofa and two armchairs outside a home in Hatfield Road, Bolton, in November 2019.

Horvath told enforcement officers from Bolton Council that he would dispose of the furniture later that day but when they returned the following day, the items were still there.

He was given an £80 fixed penalty notice and despite being sent reminder letters, failed to pay.

Horvath, now of Fletcher Street, was convicted of littering at Bolton Magistrates' Court on September 14 2021.

In his absence, he was ordered to pay a £440 fine and £700 court costs.

Following the hearing, Bolton Council’s Executive Cabinet Member for Regulatory Services, Councillor Hilary Fairclough, said: "Fly-tipping is an eyesore, and it’s also expensive to clean up – and that cost is picked up by the taxpayer.

“Everyone is responsible for disposing of their own waste correctly.

“The message to the minority who commit these acts is that we will fine or prosecute you if you dump rubbish illegally.”
