"Fly on the wall" Phil Thompson's promotion verdict Leeds United and Aston Villa fans will welcome

Sky Sports pundit Phil Thompson believes that a 22-team Premier League that would see Leeds United promotion would "really cool."

The Whites are fearful that their promotion campaign will be cancelled due to the coronavirus, with all professional football league in England postponed until April 3.

With nine league games left to play, Marcelo Bielsa's side reside at the top of the table, holding a seven-point gap on third-place Fulham.

With fears that play won't get back underway on the forecasted date, there have been discussions in the media about the best way to settle the season if it can't be concluded.

Whilst some believe the fairest solution would be to cancel the leagues and deem them void, denying the Whites of a potential return to the top flight, others have suggested freezing the league table.

The latest proposal has been to promote Leeds and West Brom from the Championship and not relegating any current top-flight sides, forming a 22-team Premier League for the 2020/21 season.

That's a solution that may suit all parties, believes Thompson, who believes it would be unfair to deny Liverpool the Premier League title and Leeds United promotion, amongst other clubs across England.

"There are so many situations, and I'd like to be a fly on the wall next Thursday when they are having the meeting again,”  Thompson told Sky Sports.  “

"That would be really, really cool. But, you look at it, we [Liverpool] have waited 30 years for a Premier League title. Leeds United have been fighting desperately trying to get up for 15 years back to the Premier League. So, that is big.

“There's a big gap down there in the  Championship . How they are going to sort it out, I don't know. The bottom teams in the Premier League.

"Aston Villa have that one game in hand. I know it's difficult and people would say 'Oh, would they win it or would they not win it?'.

"But you have to say they could do. They would then move up three or four places.”
