As part of the Gallipoli centenary commemorations, Sydney Chamber Orchestra brings David Malouf’s acclaimed novel Fly Away Peter to life. Set on Queensland’s Gold Coast and the Western Front, the story follows Jim Saddler, a young, sensitive bird-watcher who is thrown into the trenches of the first world war.
Librettist Pierce Wilcox adapted Malouf’s story into an opera in 1983, and composer Elliott Gyger created the score. After a successful run in Sydney, the opera will be staged for Melbourne festival and directed by theatre and opera director Imara Savage.
