Flu surges nationwide, hospitals reinstate mask requirements amid rising cases

Flu activity is high or very high in two thirds of states.

Flu Hits the Nation Hard as Cases Rise, Uncertain if Peak has Arrived

Flu season is in full swing, with two-thirds of states reporting high or very high flu activity, and indications that it may be on the rise. According to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the impact of the flu is becoming increasingly severe. With over seven million reported flu-related illnesses this season already, there have been 73,000 hospitalizations and a distressing 4,500 deaths attributed to the virus.

The CDC presents a color-coded graph illustrating the severity of the flu outbreak across the country, with the darkest purple indicating the hardest-hit areas, predominantly in the southeast. However, as a growing concern, the virus is making its way westward, extending its reach into California. Notably, a majority of states are grappling with either high or very high levels of the flu.

Comparing this season's flu activity with previous years proves challenging due to the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. One can observe the current season, represented by the blue line, starting off with a slower pace compared to the preceding season, depicted by the orange line. The purple line represents the last flu season before COVID-19 swept through our lives, essentially diminishing flu cases to naught. The uncertainty lies in whether this season will surpass the previous one, or if we are headed towards a potential peak.

January, historically, is a notorious period for respiratory viruses, including the flu. However, the challenging milieu is further compounded by the presence of other circulating pathogens such as COVID-19 and RSV. It's a veritable grab bag of contagious illnesses, floating around in the air, just waiting to make us miserable.

As a response to the escalating flu activity, some hospitals in various states and cities have taken action by reinstating mask requirements. While mask mandates in public areas and transportation systems have not yet been universally implemented, certain hospital systems in Los Angeles County, Chicago, and Boston have mandated masks for healthcare providers, patients, and visitors. Hospitals are inherently high-risk environments, making such measures a logical precaution.

As the nation finds itself in the midst of a flu surge, it is imperative for individuals to remain vigilant and take necessary preventive measures. This includes practicing good hand hygiene, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and, if possible, getting vaccinated against the flu. In the face of the flu's unwelcome resurgence, combined with the ongoing battle against COVID-19, staying healthy requires a multifaceted approach and unwavering adherence to public health advice.

The question remains: Will the flu continue its trajectory upward or are we on the cusp of a peak? Only time will tell, but for now, it is crucial for everyone to prioritize their well-being and safeguard themselves against the insidious spread of the flu virus.
