Flowers which 'brighten up town' ripped from planters and strewn across Stapleford by vandal

Flowers which were planted to "brighten up" Stapleford were ripped from their planters and strewn across the town by a vandal.

People travelling into the town are typically greeted by the colourful planters which have been placed at the junction of Eatons Road and Toton Lane.

They are looked after by members of the community.

However on the evening of Sunday, October 25, a vandal ripped out the flowers and threw them across the street.

Richard MacRae, chairman of the Stapleford Community Group, said it has "happened several times".

He told Nottinghamshire Live: "We've had heathers which cost a lot and they have been stolen twice.

"People enjoy doing these planters, it is good for your mental health. We get lots of plants from Lidl and Aldi and my wife nurses them back to health, we have had kids helping us.

"It is about the cost to the community. The planters are the first thing you see coming into Stapleford. They have ripped them out and destroyed some of them.

"It is mindless."

However, within a matter of minutes one man in the community had already offered to help.

Mark Gunn, 27, took his van down to help replant the flowers which could be salvaged.

He says he had been struggling with money during the coronavirus pandemic and decided to set up a landscaping business called M&P Landscapes LTD.

Mr MacRae said after he had finished they "looked better than they did this morning".

Speaking to Nottinghamshire Live, Mr Gunn said: "I spoke to Richard and offered to go and help.

"I've just set up my business. I decided to set up a landscaping business because it is something I'm good at.

"So I just took my van down as I thought I would do something for the community.

"When I arrived they were all over the place.

"I just swept it all through, there were four plants which were hanging out and I just bedded them in and moved some rubbish and bottles from the planters.

"It didn't take long."
