Flowers left at roadside where young man died at the weekend

Flowers have been left at the scene of a crash which killed a man in his twenties.

Emergency services were called to the Southern Expressway northbound at 9.37am on Saturday, after reports of a crash involving a car that had come off the road.

A 22-year-old man, believed to be the driver of the car, died at the scene.

The road was shut for most of the day, with Runcorn police announcing it had reopened at around 4pm.

The crash happened during heavy rain, although investigators have given no indication whether they believe this was a factor.

Flowers have now been tied to a lamp-post close to the scene of the crash, and two collision appeal signs placed at the roadside.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said the saloon car had left the road.

When firefighters arrived, paramedics were treating the occupant of the car.

Crews from Runcorn and Widnes cleared trees and removed branches from the car and were at the scene for about an hour.

Onlookers said an air ambulance also attended.
