Flowers for Wishaw woman whose dedication to family is plain to see

A Wishaw woman who almost went blind has thanked her mum for guiding her through the most difficult time of her life.

Mum-of-two Amanda Ledwith nominated her mother Jean Ledwith for our Say it with Flowers award to thank her for all she’s done for her family recently.

Jean, 64, from Craigneuk, has been helping both Amanda and her own husband Davie get through a worrying time with their health.

Amanda, 45, woke up one morning in August and found she couldn’t see out of her right eye.

“I was diagnosed with fast-growing cataracts. In the space of six weeks I’ve had two surgeries in my eye and I’m going back in for another op later in December. They thought it would be a simple operation to removed the cataract but I was nearly blind.

"I had to go back in two weeks later for emergency surgery and had a shunt put in my eye. And now the other eye has gone. It’s just been a rough time, it’s been a nightmare.

“And at the same time my dad has been diagnosed with mouth cancer.

“My dad was getting painful mouth ulcers under his tongue and because I’m a dental nurse I was at him for months to have his mouth checked.”

Amanda’s dad Davie had to have surgery in his mouth but thankfully now needs no further treatment.

Meanwhile, Jean has been going back and forward to Amanda’s in Netherton to look after her grandchildren Daniel and Carla-Jane and collect them from school.

“I’m a single parent with two kids and my mum’s running after me, the kids and my dad,” Amanda continued. “She doesn’t drive and relies on the buses. I just thought she deserved the flowers as a wee pick-me-up, we’d be lost without her, she does everything.

“I just want to say thanks for everything she’s done, she will get quite a shock as she won’t expect it at all.”

When Amanda told us about her mum’s selfless help for the family we were delighted to present her with a beautiful floral arrangement courtesy of Pixie’s Petals in Newmains.
