Loy Krathong in Sing Buri

From Nov 3-5, the "Thipawaree At Ban Rachan Wanpen" Festival will be held on and around the Ban Rachan Canal near Wat Pho Kao Ton in Khai Bang Rachan district, Sing Buri province, to mark the Loy Krathong Festival.

On Nov 3, participants will make merit in the morning, then create krathongs and watch the demonstration of krathong and garland-making. Lanterns will be lit at the gate of Khai Bang Rachan Camp where a procession of krathongs will be proceeded through in the evening. Every day, visitors can watch local art performances and sports, the lighting of lanterns and taste local food by the canal. Local delicacies can be enjoyed from 7.30am-8.30pm.

The Loy Krathong Festival dates to the Sukhothai period more than 700 years ago. It is a time for people to pay respect to the Lord Buddha and seek forgiveness from the goddess of water for any misdeeds against water. The word loy means "to float", while krathong is a lotus blossom-shaped vessel containing candles, incense sticks and flowers in which a person floats down a river, or on a lake or pond. Krathongs are traditionally made of banana leaves and trunk, coconut husk and colourful paper, while those made of styrofoam should be avoided.

In Thailand, the Loy Krathong Festival is celebrated nationwide. It usually features fireworks, parades, krathong- making contests and beauty pageants in which beauty queens hold the title of "nang nop/pa/mart".
