SENDAI -- Sea bindweed flowers are in full bloom on Nobiru beach in Higashimatsushima, Miygai Prefecture, despite concerns that the species could become extinct following the devastation caused by the March 2011 crisis.
Tsunami triggered by the Great East Japan Earthquake caused catastrophic harm to the flowers. They bloomed in the following year, however, and the area in which they grow is said to be expanding gradually each year.
The pale pink flowers swayed in the sea breeze at the about three-kilometer-long beach, where the construction of a seawall has been under way.
According to the Higashimatsushima Tourist Association, the blooming season lasts until about late June.
