Flowers and tributes left at Gosforth school to girl killed by falling tree

Flowers have been left at the Newcastle school where a six-year-old girl was hit by a falling tree.

The girl was taken to hospital following the incident on Friday afternoon but died on Saturday morning.

Emergency services were called to Gosforth Park First School on Granville Road at around 1pm.

Paramedics took the schoolgirl to the Royal Victoria Infirmary by road with an air ambulance doctor on board but, despite their efforts, she died the next morning.

Tributes have been flooding in from the community and the school's headteacher, Leanne Lamb, said staff and pupils had been left "devastated".

Now, flowers and tributes have been left at the school for the "beautiful little girl".

One message said: "Bright and beautiful flowers for a beautiful little girl. Our thoughts are with you all at this time."

Ms Lamb said extra support is being provided for both staff and students. She added: "Our entire school community has been shocked and devastated by the tragic news that one of our pupils passed away during the night, as a result of injuries suffered from a falling tree in the school grounds.

"First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with the child’s family and friends as they come to terms with this tragic loss.

"As a school and community, we will take the time to mourn and are putting in place extra support for the staff and pupils who are devastated by this incident."

An investigation has been launched with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said on Saturday: "Our officers are continuing to support her family and our thoughts are with them at this incredibly difficult time.

"An investigation has been launched with police working in conjunction with the HSE."
