Florida tourist punched by angry driver in New York dies of injuries

NEW YORK _ A Florida man left in critical condition after he was punched by an irate motorist has died of his injuries, authorities said Wednesday.

Cops confirmed that Sandor Szabo, 35, died at New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell late Tuesday after he was taken off life support.

Family members planned to harvest the man's organs for donation.

Szabo was returning to his Long Island City hotel after attending his stepsister's wedding when he banged on the window of a parked SUV on 29th Street near 41st Avenue in Long Island City at 1:15 a.m. on Sunday.

The driver socked Szabo, who flew backward and slammed his head on the sidewalk, police said. He never regained consciousness.

"When he was hit, he was struck so hard in the face," his brother Dominic Szabo told the New York Daily News on Monday.

Szabo had just left his brother's hotel, and was heading back to his hotel, and he was likely trying to wave down a cab because his phone battery was dead, Dominic Szabo said.

The driver who hit him zoomed off north on 29th Street and remains at large, cops said.

Sandor Szabo, who works in digital advertising, attended a trade show in New York before the wedding, relatives said.
