Florida ticket holder scoops $1.58 billion lottery win

One lucky person is set for a $1.58 billion (£1.24 billion) payout after buying the winning ticket in the Mega Millions lottery.

The individual, who has yet to claim the prize, bought the ticket in Florida and matched all six numbers.

Local newspapers said the winning ticket was bought at a Publix Super Market in Neptune Beach, a coastal community just east of Jacksonville.

They beat the 1 in 302.6 million odds of winning the game which is played across the US by matching all of the lottery numbers drawn on Tuesday of 13, 19, 20, 32, 33, and the Megaplier, which was 14.

The winner will have a choice between receiving the $1.58 billion in annual payments, or taking a lump sum cash payment of $783.3 million (£615 million).

The last Mega Millions jackpot was won by a player in New York in April and came to $20 million (£15.7 million).

A $2.04 billion (£1.6 billion) Powerball jackpot in November 2022 ranks as the record highest lottery prize, according to media reports.

Mega Millions tickets - which are sold for $2 (£1.57) - are available in 45 US states, Washington DC and the US Virgin Islands.
