Florida surfer bitten after landing on shark

A surfer who jumped off his board during an aerial maneuver Tuesday at Florida’s New Smyrna Beach was bitten by a shark after landing on the predator.

Donald Walsh, 40, received lacerations to his calf and one of his hands during the incident at a beach sometimes referred to as the “shark attack capital of the world.”

WESH 2 reported that Walsh told lifeguards that he had caught air and came down on a shark estimated to measure about 6 feet. WESH 2 reporter Claire Metz tweeted that the man was bitten only once and declined a ride to a hospital.

Bay News 9 reported that Walsh had been surfing in waist-deep water and that the incident occurred at about 11:55 a.m. He was treated by Ocean Rescue.

This was the fourth shark bite documented this year at New Smyrna Beach, which is in Volusia County.
