Florida stuck in COVID-19 grip with 130 more deaths and another 11,500 cases

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ Friday's COVID-19 report from Florida shows the state remains mired in a bad spell with some of the highest case and death totals of the pandemic.

Health officials recorded 130 more deaths and 11,548 more people with infections.

Throughout the pandemic, only two other days have had more fatalities reported, and only three other days have had more cases.

For the past seven days, Florida has averaged 100 deaths a day from COVID-19. That's an unprecedented mark.

For comparison, last month from June 11 to June 17, the state averaged 31 deaths a day.

SOUTH FLORIDA

South Florida, which accounts for 29% of Florida's population, reported 4,439 new cases in the past day, or 38.4% of the daily total for the state, according to the state Department of Health.

Broward County: 1,347 new coronavirus cases reported Friday, bringing the total to 36,913. A total of 500 people have died, 13 more since Thursday.

Palm Beach County: 650 new cases were reported, bringing the total to 24,361. A total of 656 people have died, four more since Thursday.

Miami-Dade County: 2,442 new cases, bringing the total to 77,867. A total of 1,285 people have died. That's 24 more than the toll listed in Thursday's report.

TESTING AND THE POSITIVITY RATE

Florida says it has tested almost 2.9 million people since the pandemic began, and 11.3% have been positive. That's 327,241 people with infections.

That's the third-highest number of COVID-19 tests in the nation, behind California (5.9 million) and New York (4.9 million.)

A key figure to watch is the positivity rate for testing, because it indicates the prevalence of the disease in an area.

Florida reported an 11.9% positivity rate for tests in the previous 24-hour period, down from Thursday's 13%. In May, after the state reopened, Florida's positivity rate hovered around 5% for COVID-19 testing.

The daily positive test rate in Friday's report was 14.3% for Broward County, 18.3% for Miami-Dade and 10.6% for Palm Beach.

DEATHS

Statewide: The official COVID-19 death total for Florida stood at 4,912 on Friday. That figure includes 107 non-residents. The three big South Florida counties have had 2,441 total deaths, which is 49.7% of the statewide total.

Senior care: At least 2,302 deaths have occurred in nursing homes and long-term care facilities, a figure that represents 47.9% of the state's total for coronavirus deaths of residents. Broward accounted for 172 deaths or 7.5% of the long-term care facility deaths. Miami-Dade accounted for 572 deaths, or 24.8%, and Palm Beach County had 272 deaths, or 11.8%.

HOSPITALIZATIONS

The number of people being treated for COVID-19 at hospitals decreased by 538 on Friday, according to the Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration. The total is 8,561 patients statewide, as of 12:16 p.m.

Miami-Dade County has the most people hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19, with 1,734, a decrease of 154 since Thursday. Next is Broward with 1,187, which is 16 fewer than Thursday. Palm Beach County has 506 people admitted to hospitals to treat the disease, a decrease of 164 from the previous day.

The state also reported that 20,191 Florida residents have been hospitalized since the start of the pandemic.
