Florida State (0-0) vs. Boise State (0-0) Game Preview

Okay, Florida State. Let’s try thing again.

The Seminoles missed out on a bowl appearance last season – inexcusable for a program that was a regular on the post-season circuit for more than three decades. It started last season with a big dull dud of a 24-3 loss at home to Virginia Tech.

It’s one thing to lose to Virginia Tech, or to Alabama – like FSU did to open up the 2016 season. To lose to an unranked Group of Five program? Ohhhhh, no.

But this isn’t just any Group of Five program.

It’s totally warranted if Boise State wants to play the disrespect card. It’s unranked, and few are thinking it can come into Jacksonville and handle a jacked up Seminole team. Come up with one big performance, and Boise State goes to the head of the race to get to the New Year’s Six.

The Broncos follow this up with a tough game against Marshall, and FSU gets a tune-up against ULM before diving into ACC play at Virginia.

Why Boise State Will Win

The Broncos might have a slew of new parts on both sides of the ball, but the schemes are still in place and the ability to be amazing again on third downs should still be there.

They finished second in the nation in third down conversions last season, and were 11th in third down stops. Florida State? 126th in college football in third down conversions.

What’s the last thing the FSU offense needs to kick off the season? A salty defense full of a whole lot of experience and talent. Boise State gets back seven starters and ten of the top 13 tacklers. After taking a few years off, the Seminole O line has to be a whole lot better right away against a terrific Bronco defensive front.

Why Florida State Will Win

The Seminole defense is loaded with experience. There’s speed, talent, and it should be back to being the D that was so dominant for so long.

16 of the top 20 tacklers are returning with a special secondary that should be able to lock down a good Boise State receiving corps that needs a few stars to emerge from the depth.

The question marks at quarterback aren’t going to help the Broncos, with a fight for the starting gig going up until the last moment. FSU is going through a bit of a battle at QB, too, but at least James Blackman and Alex Hornibrook are experienced.

The overall talent is there on offense. Now it has to produce.

What’s Going To Happen

Does any coach have more Week 1 pressure than Willie Taggart and does any team have to win more – and look good doing it – than Florida State?

Boise State is dangerous. It has the coaching staff, the toughness, and the fearlessness to step in and pull this off if the FSU O isn’t able to move the ball, but with the temperature expected to be around 90 degrees in Jacksonville, and with the muggy conditions with possible storms, FSU will be able to hang in there just a wee bit longer.

The Seminole defense will be great, the offense will struggle, and it’ll be a tough, good win against a Boise State team that has way too many replacements needing to step up. It won’t be anything impressive, but FSU will take it.
