Florida State's Josh Sweat out 1-2 weeks after meniscus surgery

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. _ Florida State defensive end Josh Sweat will be out at least 1-2 weeks after undergoing a minor knee surgery in his left knee Thursday, coach Jimbo Fisher said after practice.

Sweat's procedure removed a slight tear of his meniscus, Fisher said.

"He tried to go for a day or two, and it swelled (again)," Fisher said of Sweat.

"He had a little piece of cartilage in there that they clipped out. It was very clean. ... He wanted to play with it, and couldn't do it so we went to clean it out."

Sweat practiced on Monday and Tuesday for the Seminoles, after suffering the injury on Sept. 15, two days before the Louisville game. Sweat did not travel with the team to Louisville, but rejoined his teammates a day before the game.

During FSU's third episode of "A Season With Florida State Football," which aired on Tuesday night, Sweat said he feared he suffered a "100 percent ACL tear."

The injury was sustained on the same knee he dislocated and suffered a torn ACL during his senior year in high school.

"We're all very relieved," Fisher said of the severity of Sweat's injury.

Fisher emphasized the nature of Sweat's procedure was different than the surgery sophomore safety Derwin James had on Sept. 13.

Instead of having the meniscus sowed like James, Sweat had a piece simply cut, which could lead to a quicker recovery time.

Outside linebacker Jacob Pugh and true freshman defensive end Brian Burns will replace Sweat in the lineup against USF on Saturday.
