Florida State pulls off wild trick play that was nearly disastrous

Florida State successfully completed a wild trick play for a huge first down on a touchdown drive, and that’s not something we see very often for the Seminoles, who entered Saturday’s game against Syracuse with a 3-4 record.

But this play was impressive and straight-up fun.

On 3rd-and-8 from their own 30-yard line late in the second quarter, quarterback Alex Hornibrook, who transferred from Wisconsin, took the snap and quickly threw a lateral pass to running back Cam Akers. As Akers scrambled, Hornibrook retreated to the team’s 13-yard line before getting the ball again and heaving it to receiver Tamorrion Terry back around the line of scrimmage.

Terry took off and got the first down and so much more for a 54-yard play before eventually being taken down at Syracuse’s 16.

That could have ended so poorly for the Seminoles with Hornibrook that far back and getting tackled immediately after getting rid of the ball. But luckily for them, instead of a 17-yard loss, they picked up a huge first down.

Florida State eventually scored and went into halftime with a 21-3 lead over the Orange.
