May 12--Everett Golson visited Florida State on Monday and is "negotiating" with Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher about transferring to the school, Fisher said Tuesday.
Fisher confirmed that the former Notre Dame quarterback was on Florida State's campus Monday.
"He's a great young man, I really enjoyed getting to know him," Fisher said at the ACC spring meetings. "Good player, played really good against us."
Golson, a two-year starter at Notre Dame, announced that he intended to transfer last week after it became clear that he wasn't guaranteed a starting spot with the Fighting Irish. The highly talented yet turnover-prone quarterback will not be prevented from transferring to the school of his choice, Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said Monday.
"It's just not true," Swarbrick. "The way this process works is a student identifies schools they would like to consider and we have not denied a single school that Everett Golson identified as one he has an interest in going to."
Fisher said he was not concerned that Golson would clog up an already crowded quarterback competition. Sean Maguire appears to be the current leader to become Florida State's next starting quarterback, although he struggled in the team's spring game.
Golson, who has 41 career passing touchdowns, 20 interceptions and 5,850 passing yards in two years, likely would push for a starting spot. A rising senior, Golson could play immediately as a graduate transfer.
"It's an open competition and I communicate with everybody," Fisher said. "We've got to do what gives us the best chance to be successful."
Golson reportedly visited Florida on Tuesday, according to Sports Illustrated.
With just one year of eligibility, Golson likely would want to be guaranteed a starting spot wherever he lands.
Fisher said he would "talk and go through it" with Golson if he does indeed determine he wants to play at Florida State.
