MIAMI — Florida saw 20,194 COVID-19 cases Tuesday, according to Miami Herald calculations of state data reported Wednesday to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
This is the largest single-day increase of newly reported cases since Aug. 28, when 21,189 were reported. Cases have now reached the record-breaking days of the delta variant in August, when over 20,000 new daily cases were reported several times, according to Herald calculations.
No new deaths were reported for Tuesday — though it is likely the Florida Department of Health will add deaths to Tuesday’s total. The state has done this in the past when it has added cases and deaths to previous days during the pandemic.
In all, Florida has recorded at least 3,799,661 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 62,264 deaths.
In the past seven days, as the omicron version of the virus has circulated, the state has added 27 deaths and 10,770 cases per day on average, according to Herald calculations of CDC data. That rolling seven-day case average is the highest it’s been since Sept. 18, when it was at 10,971.
COVID-19 hospitalizations in Florida
There were 1,849 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in Florida, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services report Wednesday. That is 206 more people hospitalized than in Tuesday’s report, when 234 hospitals reported but not necessarily the same hospitals. Wednesday’s hospitalization data was reported from 230 Florida hospitals.
COVID-19 patients now take up 3.41% of patient beds, compared to 3.06% in the previous day’s reporting hospitals.
Of the people hospitalized in Florida, 314 were in intensive care unit beds, an increase of 27. That represents about 5.06% of the state’s ICU hospital beds, compared to 4.69% the previous day.
