Florida reports record 216 COVID-19 deaths

Florida on Wednesday reported 216 coronavirus-related deaths over a 24-hour stretch — a new record for the state.

Why it matters: Florida also reported a record number of fatalities on Tuesday, per Reuters. The state's death toll is over 6,300, with more than 451,000 confirmed coronavirus cases, according to the Florida Department of Health. Florida has the second-most coronavirus cases in the U.S.

The big picture: As of Wednesday, over 150,000 coronavirus-related deaths have taken place in the U.S. — more than any other country's confirmed death count.

The state of play: Florida's growing number of coronavirus cases is pushing its hospitals to the brink, as 51 report running out of ICU beds, according to the Agency for Health Care Administration.

  • Miami-Dade and Broward counties, Florida's two most populous, reported 14 of their hospitals' ICU beds were at capacity.
  • There are over 110,000 coronavirus cases in Miami-Dade County, the third-highest of any county in the country, according to Johns Hopkins University.
