A 10-day conservation competition in Florida ended with one participant removing an extraordinary 96 Burmese pythons from the Everglades. Tom Rahill, a veteran python hunter, won the 2026 Florida Python Challenge after accounting for more than a third of the 280 invasive snakes removed by all competitors during the event.

As reported by The Guardian, the challenge, organised by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the South Florida Water Management District, brought together 907 participants from 30 US states, Canada and Vietnam. Rahill received the competition's $10,000 ultimate grand prize for removing the most pythons. While Rahill's record-setting haul made headlines, it also underscores a sobering truth about invasive species management, that even remarkable individual efforts can only slow, not solve, an ecological crisis already deeply entrenched across the Everglades.
Why Florida is spending so much effort removing Burmese pythons
Burmese pythons are native to South and Southeast Asia but have established a breeding population in southern Florida. Their presence has become a major conservation concern because they are large predators capable of consuming a wide range of native animals.
The Everglades is particularly vulnerable because the snakes can prey on mammals, birds and reptiles that evolved without such a predator. Their expansion has been associated with severe declines in several native mammal populations.
Burmese pythons are not native to Florida and negatively affect native wildlife. The agency has therefore supported both organised competitions and year-round removal programmes to reduce their numbers.
The competition turned python removal into a race against an invasive predator
The Florida Python Challenge was created to give members of the public a direct role in controlling the invasive snakes while raising awareness of the ecological damage they can cause.
This year's event ran from July 10 to July 19, 2026, with participants competing for a share of $25,000 in prizes. The ultimate prize went to whoever removed the greatest number of pythons.
Rahill's 96 snakes represented an unusually large haul. The result was also well ahead of the previous year's winning total: Taylor Stanberry removed 60 pythons in 2025, earning the same $10,000 grand prize.
The snakes are not simply captured and released
The challenge is fundamentally different from ordinary wildlife competitions because the objective is permanent removal.
Florida regulations allow Burmese pythons to be humanely killed after capture in designated circumstances. The FWC states that live transport of captured pythons is not permitted and that snakes must be humanely killed onsite.
The rules reflect the fact that Burmese pythons are an established invasive species rather than a protected native animal. Florida also allows the removal of non-native pythons on private property with landowner permission and on specified FWC-managed lands.
One of the biggest snakes captured was more than 16 feet long
The competition also included a prize for the longest python, highlighting just how large these reptiles can become.
While Rahill dominated the overall numbers, Rahm Levinson won the longest-snake prize with a python measuring 16 feet 5 inches. The discovery illustrates the extraordinary size that Burmese pythons can reach after establishing themselves in Florida's subtropical environment.
Large females are particularly significant from a population-control perspective because Burmese pythons can produce substantial numbers of eggs. The FWC notes that females can lay 50 to 100 eggs at a time, giving established populations considerable reproductive potential.
Why removing hundreds of snakes will not solve Florida's python problem
The 280 pythons removed during the competition represent only a small part of the much larger population spread across southern Florida.
The FWC has reported that more than 23,000 wild Burmese pythons had been removed from Florida since 2000 by 2025, including animals removed through government programmes and other efforts. The agency stresses that continued removal is necessary because the snakes are already established and reproducing in the wild.
That makes the annual competition less about declaring victory and more about maintaining pressure on an invasive predator that is extremely difficult to eradicate once established.
The python hunters are becoming part of a wider conservation effort
The competition also illustrates how Florida has expanded its approach beyond professional wildlife workers. Members of the public can participate in organised challenges, report sightings and, where regulations allow, remove invasive pythons themselves.
The strategy does not depend on a single method. State agencies also employ contracted python hunters, while researchers continue studying ways to detect and control the snakes across the Everglades.
Since 2017, the combined efforts of Florida agencies and their contractors have removed more than 19,000 pythons, according to figures reported around the 2026 competition.
This growing reliance on public participation reflects a pragmatic shift in wildlife management, one that treats ordinary citizens not as bystanders but as essential partners in confronting an ecological threat too vast for any single agency to handle alone.
Why 96 snakes matter even when the invasion continues
Tom Rahill's 96-snake haul is unlikely to change the overall size of Florida's Burmese python population on its own. But every successfully removed breeding-age snake represents one less predator in an ecosystem already under pressure.
The broader purpose of the Florida Python Challenge is therefore not simply to produce a winner. It is to turn an invasive-species crisis into a conservation effort involving hundreds of people.
