A passenger plane has burst into flames at Florida's Fort Lauderdale International Airport. Emergency teams rushed to combat the blaze as thick plumes of black smoke poured from the aircraft on the runway.
The Associated Press said flames engulfed one engine on the Dynamic Airways Boeing 767. Airport spokesman Greg Myer told WSVN-TV that the fire was quickly put out.
Multiple crews responded to the incident, which was captured by local media. There was no immediate word on the details of the flight, or whether there had been passengers on board.
Transportation officials are still investigating a similar incident involving a British Airways Boeing 777 jet at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas last month. The British jet, packed with passengers bound for London Gatwick Airport, had just started its take-off run when the port engine burst into flames, prompting an evacuation as black smoke billowed into the sky.
The engine in the Las Vegas incident was a General Electric GE90 engine and it was the first time since its introduction in 1995 that a model has suffered a fire that had gone beyond its core sending flames directly onto the wing and fuselage.
According to CBS News, a pilot of another plane that had been taxiing behind the Dynamic 767 had seen fuel leaking from it before the fire started. The plane was bound for Caracas, Venezuela, and was therefore probably carrying a passengers manifest of mainly Venezuelan nationals.
Dynamic is a small airline that connects Fort Lauderdale, New York, Venezuela and Guyana.
