Florida man killed by SWAT deputies after standoff had BB gun, sheriff says

ORLANDO, Fla. _ The 19-year-old man shot and killed by Orange County SWAT deputies after a standoff Thursday was armed with a BB gun, Sheriff Jerry Demings said Friday.

Demings identified the suspect as Landon Christopher Wooten.

In the hours after the shooting, Demings had told reporters that Wooten had fired a gun at the SWAT team, prompting five SWAT deputies to return fire, killing him.

In his update Friday, Demings said the deputies had no way of knowing Wooten's gun wasn't real. "It appeared that his intentions were to engage the deputies in a gunfight," Demings said.

He also showed reporters drone footage of the lead-up to the shooting.

"If you look at the set of facts that I've laid out today, I think that the average person will say that the deputies were put in a position where they were justified in taking the action that they took," he said.
