ORLANDO, Fla. _ Almost halfway through the ACA open enrollment period, Florida is leading the nation in the number of people who have signed up for health insurance, according to the federal data released on Wednesday.
Of the 1.7 million people who signed up for a plan on the federal insurance exchange between the start of open enrollment on Nov. 1 and Nov. 16, more than 460,000 were from Florida.
Texas ranked second with 230,000 plan selections, followed by Georgia with 106,000, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' weekly enrollment snapshot.
In Florida more insurance companies are participating in the health insurance marketplace _ also called the exchange _ this year than they did last year. And the premiums are expected to decrease slightly or stay the same for many.
ACA navigators say it's important for consumers to shop around, even if they're planning to stay with their current plan.
Florida led the nation last year with 1.7 million plan selections, similar to the number of sign-ups in 2017.
