Florida governor to visit Pulse memorial ahead of annual remembrance ceremony

ORLANDO, Fla. _ Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will visit the Pulse memorial at 5 p.m. Wednesday, according to his official schedule.

The visit comes three years to the day after the mass shooting claimed 49 lives and wounded dozens more at the gay nightclub.

DeSantis faced criticism late Tuesday over a proclamation that commemorated the third anniversary of the massacre, but didn't mention LGBTQ or Hispanic communities that were hit the hardest by the attack. In a tweet posted Wednesday morning, DeSantis reiterated his order to lower flags to half-staff and included mentions of LGBTQ and Hispanics.

"Today we mourn the loss of life of 49 innocent victims of an ISIS-inspired terrorist attack at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando that targeted the LGBTQ and Hispanic community, and Florida as a whole," the tweet read.

In an email Wednesday afternoon, the governor's office released an updated proclamation mentioning the two communities, and said a member of his staff "made an error in the previous version."

"The Governor stands in solidarity with the LGBTQ and Hispanic communities who were attacked during this horrific act of violence at Pulse three years ago today," Communications Director Helen Aguirre Ferre said in an email.

His visit also comes about two hours prior to a planned remembrance ceremony at the interim memorial. That gathering, which isn't expected to include the governor, will feature community members and leaders to honor the victims, survivors and first responders.
