Florida Gators beat Ole Miss, but have a lot to work on

The Florida Gators beat the Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday by a score of 51-35 in each teams’ season opener.

Offensively, the Gators looked great. Projected superstar quarterback Kyle Trask threw for 416 yards and six touchdowns with zero interceptions. Tight end Kyle Pitts had a monster day, reeling in eight passes for 170 yards and four touchdowns while Florida put up 196 yards rushing on the day. Overall, it looks like Dan Mullen’s offense is going to be a problem for SEC defenses this year.

But on the other side of the ball, today raised plenty of questions about Todd Grantham’s defense. The Rebels put up 35 points and 613 total yards against Florida. Yes, 613 total yards. 443 through the air and 170 on the ground. Additionally, ‘Third and Grantham’ was on display all day long, with the Rebels going 9/14 on third down conversions.

If Florida’s offense can play like it did today, the Gators will stand a chance with anybody in the league. But what happens when Florida needs to buckle down and play some defense?
