FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ Florida has had at least 1,399 die from the new coronavirus, the state said Monday. A total of 36,897 individuals have tested positive.
Miami-Dade County, where the bulk of the outbreak in the state exists, surpassed 13,000 cases.
The Florida Department of Public Health reported 13,092 infections in the county on Monday _ and 378 deaths. Miami-Dade County has 35% of the state's cases and 27% of the deaths, but just 13% of Florida's population.
State reports show Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties accounted for 21,786 cases as of Monday, an increase of 569 over the previous 24 hours. There have been 782 deaths in the three counties, an increase of 10 from the day before.
The 64 counties outside southeast Florida were beginning Phase 1 reopening on Monday.
The 1,399 deaths the state reported on Monday is an increase of 311 from April 27. In the previous seven days, 299 deaths were reported. In the week before, 319 people died.
The 36,897 cases as of Monday is 4,759 higher than April 27. In the previous seven days, the number of cases increased by 5,478. The week before, the state reported an increase of 6,059 cases.
The number of South Florida deaths on Monday, 782, is an increase of 150 from a week ago. Over the previous week, the region's deaths increased by 176. The week before, the region's deaths had increased by 195.
The number of South Florida cases on Monday, 21,786, is 2,659 higher than on April 27. In the prior week, the number of new cases in the region grew by 3,420. In the week before that, the number of South Florida cases increased 3,670.
The coronavirus death toll in the United States is 67,781, including more than 18,925 victims in the national hot spot of New York City. The country's total number of cases is approaching 1.2 million.
The Johns Hopkins University & Medicine Coronavirus Resource Center reported the worldwide total of cases is greater than 3.5 million and almost 250,000 have died.
The United States has 4.3% of the world's population and 32.9% of the world's cases.
