Florida COVID-19 update: Number of hospital patients with COVID drops to lowest since Christmas

The number of patients with coronavirus in Florida hospitals dropped to its lowest level in nearly two months and the seven-day average for new cases fell below 5,000 for the first time since Dec. 17, according to federal data.

The state reported 3,698 new cases on Tuesday, bringing the seven-day average to 4,743, data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control shows.

There were 3,806 patients infected with COVID-19 in hospitals across the state on Monday and 644 in intensive care units, according to data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The hospital data combines patients admitted for COVID-19 with those admitted for reasons other than COVID-19 or who were infected after admission.

The state also reported 344 new COVID-19 deaths over the three-day weekend.

To date, there have been 5,790,325 known cases of COVID-19 in Florida and at least 68,955 residents have died.
