Florian Wirtz to Liverpool: Bayer Leverkusen transfer stance and player plans after Jurgen Klopp rumours

Florian Wirtz is one of the hottest young properties in European football right now and has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield.

The 18-year-old is already a German international and has made three appearances for his national side, with Germany coach Hansi Flick describing him as the 'total package'.

After Wirtz appeared as a substitute in the World Cup qualification matches against Liechtenstein, Armenia and Iceland, Flick said: “Florian is just a huge asset for this team through his carefreeness.

“He’s simply an outstanding technician, loves to play, very creative, has a good shot, runs hard and is quick. He’s got a good total package.”

Clubs across Europe are all said to be vying for his signature with Bayern Munich Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal all also thought to be among Wirtz’s list of admirers

But his current club Bayer Leverkusen are thought to keep hold of Wirtz for at least a little while longer – even if Liverpool do come in with a bid for him.

Here's everything that has happened so far.

Bayer Leverkusen's transfer stance

Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes told Stats Perform: "He has a long contract until 2026. We do not have to sell players early. We want to develop him, develop our team and club with him.

"So, there are rumours, okay. You cannot avoid that, but it's not our goal to sell him.

"The players at one time or point in their career make the next step to world-class level, that's okay for us, but not too early. He is a really young player.

"That was also with Kai – he was also extraordinary and some years with us and then maybe there's the next step. But not too early."

Player's plans

Wirtz's father and agent, Hans-Joachim Wirtz, recently claimed that the in-demand teen would like to spend at least two more seasons at the Bundesliga club.

Hans-Joachim has said to Bild: "Florian definitely wants to play a good role in Leverkusen for the next two years.

"What comes after that, we do not know yet. But his focus right now is only on Bayer and the national team."
