Florian Neuhaus does something only Gini Wijnaldum can at Liverpool

Liverpool recently allowed one of their biggest contributors to leave the club in Gini Wijnaldum.

The Dutch international spent five years on Merseyside and managed to deliver a Premier League and Champions League along the way, but he'll represent Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1 next season.

Jurgen Klopp described him as a 'manager's dream' after his departure to the French capital was announced, with much of his success at Anfield stemming from how much time he spent on the field.

Wijnaldum showcased remarkable availability at Liverpool, accumulating 13,960 minutes in the Premier League alone while wearing the red jersey, which simply cannot be matched by any of his teammates.

Since the start of the 2018/19 season - the Dutchman has accumulated at least 1,938 minutes more than any of his midfield partners at Liverpool, with Fabinho second on 6,663 minutes followed by Jordan Henderson's 5,929 minutes.

He has featured in 110 league contests over that time period, compared to the next-best total of 86 posted by Fabinho.

The season which has just been concluded - which was impacted by a global pandemic - involved Wijnaldum featuring in all 38 contests, starting 34 of them.

Replacing his availability will be extremely difficult, but recent links with Florian Neuhaus suggests that the Reds are interested in doing exactly that as they search for a potential replacement this summer.

Neuhaus is currently contracted to Borussia Monchengladbach and he's still just aged 24, with speculation tipping him for a move to Anfield in the near future.

As a central midfielder in Germany, Neuhaus has shown Wijnaldum-like availability for three consecutive campaigns, featuring in 33 of their 34 Bundesliga matches this season.

Neuhaus hasn't suffered from a single injury since 2017, with at least 25 starts made for Gladbach in each of the past three seasons, and he made 24 starts before that in the Bundesliga 2 while at Dusseldorf.

The pair do share some qualities - such as the tendency to nick a goal from midfield and the ability to evade opponents who are closing them down - but Neuhaus appears a lot more progressive when in possession of the ball.

He would be a slightly different type of player for Klopp to deploy, but while retaining arguably one of Wijnaldum's most valuable yet underrated qualities.

Liverpool aren't actively targeting a midfield as things stand, but that could change should more players depart this summer and Neuhaus appears to be a sensible option for the Reds.
