Florian Lejeune's classy farewell message as he leaves Newcastle United to join La Liga side Alaves

Florian Lejeune has issued a classy farewell message to Newcastle United and their supporters.

The French defender completed a permanent move to Deportivo Alaves on Thursday evening after an impressive loan spell with the Spanish side.

A club statement read: "Florian Lejeune has completed a permanent move to Alavés - where he spent last season on loan - for an undisclosed fee.

"Everybody at the club wishes him well for the future."

It brought to an end a four-year stay at St James' Park and although the 30-year-old had to battle two serious knee injuries during his time on Tyneside, he was still widely regarded as one of the Magpies' best defenders.

An incredible brace in stoppage time of last year's 2-2 draw away at Everton still lives long in the memories of supporters who have said their fond goodbyes to the former Eibar defender and Lejeune has repaid their support with a classy message of his own.

"I wanted to thank @NUFC for all the time spent at the club," Lejeune tweeted.

"I met wonderful people who always have been there for me.

"I'm facing a new challenge and I couldn't be more thankful to all the fans, teammates and the club's staff. I wish you all the best for the upcoming season."
