Florian Kamberi's Rangers comments show a lack of class and complete disrespect for Hibs - Gordon Parks

All he had to do was hold up his new Rangers shirt, smile for the cameras and keep his mouth shut - but not Florian Kamberi.

Talk about a demolition job when he should have been building bridges.

If ever a comment should serve as what not to say after arriving on loan from Hibs then it’s this one.

“I’m very excited. Ever since I came to Scotland it has been a dream for me to move to Rangers and it has happened – so I am a very, very happy man.”

That he’s still under contract at Easter Road until summer 2022 is astonishing, given his excited welcome of what is a temporary switch.

At a stroke, Kamberi’s terms of endearment for his new club have ended any chance of him ever playing for his parent club again.

And, frankly Florian, it shows a lack of class and complete disrespect for his parent club.

You have to spare a thought too for Hibs chief executive Leeann Dempster.

She backed the player in the saga with Neil Lennon last season that ultimately finished the Celtic boss at his old club.

She must feel as though Kamberi has given her a two-finger salute on his way out of the door,

In truth, it’s a bizarre piece of business by Rangers boss Steven Gerrard.

The Swiss striker isn’t of the of the quality required to help the Ibrox club strive towards a higher level.

After one game last season I asked a member of the Hibs backroom staff why Kamberi was being deployed in a wide left role when he has all the physical attributes to play through the middle. The coach in question had a grim look on his face and said: “You want me to be honest? It’s to keep him out of the way.”

Hibs paid good money to bring Kamberi in from Grasshoppers.

But much of his time in Edinburgh has been a story of flash-in-the-pan performances and frustration.

He’s been indulged, a player who has never convinced the Hibees support, and there’s a truth that many will be glad to see the back of him.

Rangers are apparently the only team Kamberi’s wanted to play for – do us a favour.

His worth at Ibrox will become clear but the smart money is on him providing secondary support to Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe and not being a regular starter.

Time will tell if he can rise to the challenge that Gerrard’s handed him – but it’s a transfer that has everyone talking ... and not for the right reasons.

Kamberi has made a limited contribution in Leith and three league goals this season doesn’t make him prolific when it comes to discussing stats for goalscorers.

He won’t believe his luck now that he has landed time at one of the Old Firm .

Like most footballers who play in Scotland he has jumped at the opportunity and good luck to him.

But what a slap in the face.

His attempts to ingratiate himself with the Rangers fans will have consequences in the summer. His exit from Easter Road now seems inevitable.
