Floral tributes left at scene of horror fatal crash as victim named locally

Floral tributes have been left at the scene of a fatal crash in Stockport.

The victim, named locally as Nick, had been driving a white Audi on Dean Moor Road in Hazel Grove before it smashed into a tree and caught fire.

Police were responding to an incident in the area when they came across the crash at 2.20am on Friday 22 May.

The driver was taken to hospital but sadly died a few hours later.

Following the tragedy, his friends and family covered the scene of the crash with floral tributes and football memorabilia.

Several Manchester City football shirts, scarves and bouquets of flowers with messages were left near a tree stump.

One of the tributes read: "To Nick, RIP my pal going to miss you, fly high. Lots of love always."

Another said: "To Nick, RIP my mate, we will all miss you so much. Fly high."

An investigation was launched by officers from GMP which established the Audi had crashed into a tree, causing the vehicle to catch fire.

No arrests have been made, and officers are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the crash.

In a previous statement, Sgt Matthew Picton, of GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This was a tragic incident which has sadly resulted in a man losing his life.

"An investigation is underway and I would ask anyone with information to contact us.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0161 856 4741 quoting 249 of May 22.

Alternatively, call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
