Floods recede in Narathiwat, elsewhere still flooded

Floodwater levels were dropping in several areas of Narathiwat on Monday after two days without rain, but the situation remained unchanged in other southern provinces.

Residents along the Sungai Kolok, Bang Nara and Sai Buri rivers in Narathiwat merged and began cleaning their homes on Monday.

Teachers and students at Ban Kae Mae School in Rangae district started cleaning up, preparing for classes to resume on Wednesday.

The flooding forced 58 schools in the province to cancel classes last week, but many were now expected to reopen on Wednesday.

The flood situation was unchanged in other parts of the South including Trang and Phatthalung, one of the hardest hit provinces, in the wake of continual downpours in the region since Nov 26.

The disaster prevention and mitigation office in Phatthalung said flooding around Songkhla Lake was exacerbated by the rising water level in the lake and runoff pours in from other areas.

In Trang, the worst hit area was still Muang district, inundated by overflow from the Trang River.

The southern weather bureau on Monday forecast more heavy rain in provinces along the Gulf of Thailand from Chumphon to Songkhla until at least Tuesday.
