Flooding warnings issued for Warrington's Mersey Estuary with Widnes also affected

Flooding was set to hit parts of the region this weekend, with warnings issued at the Mersey Estuary in Warrington.

The high tide is expected to be higher than usual at Arpley Bridge in the Cheshire town in the early hours of Sunday as a result of exceptionally high tides.

Flooding of low lying land, roads and farmland has been forecasted between 2.15am and 2.45am tonight.

Experts say there is a possibility of flooding for parts of Chester Road in Warrington.

Alerts were also issued for the Widnes area.

Incident response staff are closely monitoring weather forecasts and river levels and will issue further flood warnings if necessary.

The public was advised to avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses, be aware of their surroundings and to keep up to date with the current situation.

Strong gales and heavy rain were set to lash the UK as summer takes a back seat this weekend.

The Met Office has issued two yellow weather warnings for rain in Scotland and Northern Ireland areas with high chances of flooding and hail.

Coastal districts are going to hit by strong winds with gusts up to 50mph until the rain clears away.

Saturday started wet and windy across northern and western areas, with sunshine and showers following during the day.

Most southern and eastern parts will start dry with some warm sunshine, although a weakening band of rain will move slowly eastwards.

For Saturday night, BBC Weather host Nick Miller said: “Now as for those temperatures overnight we’ll remember that change of air mass, quite widely in single figures as we start the day tomorrow.

“Sunday, September, first day of meteorological autumn. There will actually be quite a lot of sunshine even though it will be a decidedly fresh start to the day.

“Showers in Scotland from the word go, some pushing further south and east during the day, some possible thundery.

“Much of south Wales and southern England avoiding them though and staying dry.

“Remember last weekend where temperatures topped 30C in the hot spots, a few above 20C in the southeast of England but most of us are falling well short of that.

“But there will be sunshine around any of these showers.”

Rain will remain into Sunday, particularly in northern England and the start of Monday is expected to be chilly.
