Flooding hotspots prepared and crews on standby as rain set to batter city

Liverpool's road workers are on standby to respond to flooding on the city's highways as heavy rain continues to batter the region.

A yellow severe weather warning has been put in place by the Met Office for most of the UK, including Merseyside, from tomorrow into Sunday.

It comes after disruption earlier this week when Queen's Drive was hit by major flooding , as were parts of West Derby .

A council spokesman said routine maintenance teams have been warned they may have to respond to emergency jobs this week - and crews have been clearing gullies to try to reduce the flooding risk.

Flooding causes chaos in West Derby, Liverpool

He said: "After Tuesday’s flash flooding LSSL crews attended a total of 24 emergency call outs including major flooding on Queens Drive and West Derby . The crews have also rectified additional flooding spotted en route to these emergency call outs to prevent any further disruption.

"With heavy downpours due for the remainder of the week we have postponed routine gully maintenance for and have asked crews to attend flooding ‘hotspots’ throughout the city to ensure gully’s are unblocked to reduce the risk of flooding during the downpours.

"All routine maintenance teams have also been advised they may be required to attend emergency jobs for the remainder of the week if flooding continues to ensure we can proactively manage any risks arising."

A large section of Wales, north west and south west England are covered by the most recent Met Office warning, which is active from 6pm Saturday to 5pm Sunday.

The bad weather on Tuesday caught out a lot of people, with a month's worth of rain falling in one day.

Queens Drive was closed due to the flooding, while in flood-hit Deysbrook Lane in West Derby the water levels were so bad that there were reports people were having to leave their properties.
